Importance of practice of Shavasana and Meditation
Since I started Universal Healing Program (UHP) on 2 October 1991 for integral management of coronary heart disease (CHD), as a chance discovery ( serendipity), I have learnt the importance of practice of progressive deep relaxation i.e. Shavasana. According to our experience of last 27 years, regular practice of Shavasana for few minutes twice a day by everyone would transform the planet. There will emerge humankind that will experience the importance of experience of ‘Oneness’, a feeling of Universal Brotherhood, a crying need of the hour.
Our body and mind are different; however our body and mind are alive because of the breath we breathe. The breath which we breathe is common to all. So if we can become one with our breath for few minutes twice a day, we will experience the Oneness in us.
Father of Medicine, Hippocrates observed that ‘Mind’ is not present over our shoulders in the head but Mind is present in every cell of your body. So if we can quieten our body then the Mind automatically becomes quiet. How to relax the body? Let us start with our hand and if we try to relax the hand and try to relax it very well, unknowingly, it gets stretched. However, if you make a pleasant fist and experience the stretch in the muscles which are stretched while making a fist, we come in the present moment, our awareness being on the muscles which are being stretched when we make the fist. Then we open the fist, bringing our awareness to the muscles which are being relaxed, then the relaxation is complete. We do that once again, make a fist, experience stretching in the muscles of the fist and relax the fist. Now we forget the palm. This way one by one from toes to the head, we contract a group of muscles, experience the stretch in them and then relax, experiencing the relaxation in them. In this manner, we relax the whole body. When body is relaxed the Mind gets automatically relaxed. Then we begin to watch our breath. We don't change our breathing; we just become aware of the breath of which we were not aware. We were just concentrating on the body, stretching and relaxing it and now after forgetting the body we become one with the breath which was going in and coming out. We become a witness to every breath which goes in and comes out. When we become one with the breath like this, instinctively, we become one with the whole universe, as everything that exists in the universe breathes the same air.
Now, how would you know that you have done your relaxation well and become one with your breath? Usually, we are either right handed or left handed. In a right handed person Left Brain is an active, performing brain and Right Brain is the intuitive, thinking brain and vice versa.
There is a very simple test. You place your two fingers below your nostrils and then breathe in and breathe out. When you breathe out, experience through which nostril left or right, your breath comes out prominently. You will experience the breath coming out more through the left or the right nostril. Supposing you feel the breath coming out more from the left nostril then it means that your right brain is active. If you are a right handed person, your left brain as mentioned above, is an active performing brain and right brain is the intuitive, thinking brain. So after doing the practice of Shavasana as explained above, you watch your breath by placing your fingers below the nostrils. If you experience that the breath is coming out prominently from the left nostril and if you are right handed, then your right brain is active and activation of right brain promotes feeling of ‘Oneness’. What a simple test! Noble laureate Denninger observes that through practice of Shavasana, when you become one with the breath, it is meditation on the breath. Meditation is an awareness of the breath going in and coming out. Shavasana starts with the awareness on the body and ends with the awareness on the breath. Practice of Shavasana and Meditation helps you to swim through all the difficult waters. Moreover, Denninger says that if you can understand the whole concept properly, mere understanding and clear grasp of the subject will also help you to live peacefully. This is a great discovery by a Noble Laureate.
On 25th June 1991, at San Francisco in USA, I met 40 patients of Dr.Dean Ornish with triple vessel disease, who were advised to go for bypass surgery. They were completely free of pain and feeling very well without surgery, with only medical treatment and life style changes through Dr. Dean Ornish’s program of ‘Reversal of Heart Disease’. Excited with that experience, I started similar program on 2, October 1991, Gandhi’s Birth Day and what serendipity! The program not only makes the main stream treatment of coronary heart disease more successful but also has a great potential to promote brotherhood, which is the crying need of the hour and is the kernel of Gandhi’s teaching. Moreover, in Gujarat Vidyapith, deemed University founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, UHP Centre (UHPC) is now the part of Gujarat Vidyapith. In 2014, I was appointed Adjunct professor in Science and Nonviolence department of Gujarat Vidyapith.
A great thinker of USA, Henry David Thoreau used to say "simplify, simplify, simplify". He observed that all simple things are difficult to learn. All complicated and intricate things are learnt with diligence but the importance of simple things is not appreciated by many, who engage in intellectual pursuits with great pride. I would urge my readers to put aside all the knowledge and expertise about Meditation and Yoga aside. Meditation and different types of postures (Asanas) are of course useful but Patanjali, the Father of Yoga in his treatise on Yoga has not shown any Asana. He has only emphasised that 'Chitta Vrutty Nirodh' Yoga. If you control your mind or mind's attitudes and experience a feeling of 'Oneness' that is Yoga. That is connection with all that exists. Yoga literally means connection.
Providence has inspired this Program. Let us pray it may become a routine practice by the Humankind of planet Earth. Links in the accompanying attachment will help the reader to learn the practice of Shavasana and Meditation.

Scientists at the University of California at Los Angeles and Nobel Prize winner Elizabeth Blackburn found that 12 minutes of daily yoga meditation for eight weeks increased telomerase activity by 43%, suggesting an improvement in stress-induced aging.”
